2026 Summer Workshop – Vermont Hydric Soils Field Course – Friday, June 26 in Addison, Vermont

Thank you for attending! We had great turn out at the 2026 SSSNNE Summer Workshop. It was a packed session and the storms even gave way for us to visit the field. The morning indoor presentations ran long with questions and discussion of the research studies and Champlain Valley soils. The afternoon we visited two field sites evaluating soils and vegetation, and three pits across the Vergennes soil catena. Delicious lunch was from Pratts General Store in Bridport, Vermont. The event was capped at 35 participants due to space limitations, and we had a long waitlist. We hope to see many of you at a future session!

Check out some photos from the classroom, soil texture station, and field visits below. Please provide feedback on the workshop at this survey link.

Successful Winter Meeting for 2026

SSSNNE held a successful winter meeting at the McLane Audubon Center in Concord, NH. We had a great turnout with engaging presentations from Amy Manzelli, Esquire, BCM Environmental & Land Law, PLLC on professional ethics, Joe Manetta visiting from University of Rhode Island on carbon stock modeling in tidal marshes using soil morphology and landscape position, Dr. Josef Gorres from the University of Vermont (UVM) on the effect of invasive earthworms on soils and ecosystems, and Dr. Bailey Kretzler also from UVM on the biological indicators of soil health.

The membership voted to approve Tom Carr stepping into the Vice President role and the rest of the board to continue serving another year. All three positions will complete their their-year term at the end of 2026 and are open for nominations and new members of the board starting in 2027. Please consider serving! You can reach out to the board via the SSSNNE@gmail.com with any questions about the various positions.

2026  Winter Meeting – February 27
at the McLane  Audubon  Center in Concord, New Hampshire

The SSSNNE board is pleased to announce the 2026  Winter meeting  being held February 27th, at the McLane  Audubon  Center.  Please fill out and return the attached document with the registration fee by February 16, 2026 to ensure an accurate attendance count.

Additional updates and requests:

  • BOD positions were shuffled around during the year with  Meredith  Albers taking over the  Website Manager  role  and Tom Carr  rejoining the BOD  to fill the Vice President  role. We will accept nominations from the  floor during the meeting for individuals interested in joining the Board for any position. If no one wants to join, Tom has agreed to stay on but a vote either way is necessary.
  • On that note, Sherrie  Trefry (President), Jason  Bolduc (Treasurer), Michael  Cuomo (Secretary),  Meredith  (Website Manager),  and Tom, if voted in as Vice President, will all be completing their 3-year  BOD  commitment  at the end of 2026.  Please consider stepping up and making a commitment to join the SSSNNE BOD. We anticipate that  several  positions on the BOD will need to be filled at the 2027 Winter meeting.
  • NH NRCS is requesting 4 volunteers to serve as committee members to update the NH Catena Key. Ideally, the committee members will represent different regions within the state or adjacent states with similar soils. The effort will be led by Josh Gaimaro (NH NRCS Soil Scientist). The goal is to align the NH Catena Key with the soils mapped in WSS. Committee members will be tasked with cleaning up discrepancies and providing context for various soil groupings. If this  interests  you, please reach out to the BOD.

We hope all can attend and look forward to seeing you there.

2025 SSSNNE Summer Meeting – When Drumlins Fail: Understanding and Identifying Historic Slump and Mass Movement

The Society held a summer workshop September 12th in Weare, NH. Twenty seven participants attended from all three states. The group was welcomed by host and acting Vice President Tom Carr, who arranged for the locations, topics, a fantastic cookout lunch, and pit excavation. SSSNNE President Sherrie Trefry presented on LiDAR and its use in soil survey, followed by a presentation on Geomorphology: The making of a drumlin and landslide/slump mechanics by NH State Geologist Shane Csiki. Eight pits were viewed in the afternoon with discussions of the possible processes at work to create the particular features.

SSSNNE members present also held a brief business meeting and voted to adopt the updated Publication no. 5. September 12, 2025 is the official publication date which NH-AOT needs for their upcoming rule changes. When NH-AOT new rules take effect, projected to be  between December 2025 & January 2026, soil scientists will start using the HSI in our soil map reports.
